PE
At ABS it is our aim for all of our children to leave our school at the end of Year Six with an instilled love of sport and a committed attitude towards living a healthy lifestyle.
We will provide and equip all our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead active, healthy and fulfilling lives. Through a broad and balanced programme of activities, we aim to develop pupils' physical competence, encourage teamwork and cooperation, and instil a lifelong appreciation for the benefits of regular exercise and physical activity.
Pupils take part in a wide range of sporting experiences incorporating a range of skills and equipment. Opportunities are made for them to participate in competitive and enrichment activities.
A primary PE and sport specialist teaches a knowledge and skills based sports curriculum designed by SG Sports to all the classes, which is adapted to the needs and strengths of all the pupils.
Each class has two PE sessions a week and pupils learn two complementary sports termly (e.g hockey and cricket, which both develop hand to eye coordination).
Local links with Oval Cricket, Girls United and Castle Swimming Pool benefit pupils with weekly sessions. Their sporting and competitive interests are also addressed through lesson tournaments and trip planning.
The curriculum is structured around the following key areas:
-
Fundamental Movement Skills: Pupils develop a strong foundation of basic movement patterns, such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, which are essential for participation in a wide range of physical activities.
-
Invasion Games: Pupils learn the skills, tactics, and strategies required to participate in team-based games, such as football, basketball, and netball, fostering teamwork, communication, and decision-making abilities.
-
Net/Wall Games: Pupils develop the hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and tactical understanding needed to excel in individual and paired games, such as tennis, badminton, and table tennis.
-
Gymnastics and Dance: Pupils explore and refine their body control, balance, and creative expression through gymnastics and dance, promoting physical and artistic development.
-
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities: Pupils have the opportunity to engage in activities that challenge them physically and mentally, such as orienteering and problem-solving tasks, developing their resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills.
The PE curriculum is designed to be progressive, with each year building upon the previous year's learning. This allows them to develop a deep and comprehensive understanding of the subject, as well as the confidence and competence to participate in a wide range of physical activities.
Pupils are assessed at the end of each term and reports are written highlighting progress and next steps. The quality of education provided by the PE specialist is monitored through learning walks and pupils are asked to evaluate their learning and skills.
During the course of lessons, pupils are able to answer questions about the sport they are learning and demonstrate their retention of information. They also support each other through their demonstration of skills or techniques.
Sporting activities are inclusive and pupils’ opinions and evaluations show a development of skills and appreciation of the range of sports available.
We encourage all of our children to develop the ability to persevere in order to achieve success through a healthier lifestyle.
